Acies Bio has been featured in a new AgroPages article highlighting the potential of peptides as a promising molecule class for the next generation of crop inputs.
Peptides offer several advantages for agricultural applications, including high target specificity, biodegradability, residue-free performance, and compatibility with existing crop protection supply chains. Their mode of action can also be purpose-engineered across a broad agronomic spectrum, from crop protection to biostimulation.
However, one of the key challenges limiting wider adoption remains cost-effective production at agricultural scale. While many peptide candidates show strong performance in early-stage development and greenhouse trials, they often face difficulties when moving toward industrial manufacturing and field-level cost requirements.
The article presents how Acies Bio’s proprietary SmartRoute™ platform addresses this challenge by integrating molecular design, strain engineering, fermentation development, downstream processing, and commercial manufacturing into a single development pathway. By designing peptides with production in mind from the earliest stages, SmartRoute™ helps reduce scale-up risk and supports the development of commercially viable agricultural biologicals.
A central part of this approach is Acies Bio’s in-house Bacillus expression technology, which enables peptide production through high-density fermentation as an alternative to chemical synthesis. Combined with Acies Bio’s biomanufacturing capabilities, including current capacity of up to 10 m³ and a 30 m³ bioreactor planned for 2027, the platform supports partners from concept development through to industrial production.
